Joe Louis’ eyes bring together sporting and human greatness, as well as suffering and humility. A legend, he retained his title as world champion for 12 years. Sensitive, he befriended Max Schmeling, a Nazi icon who beat him in 1936 in New York, before taking his revenge. He took care of this sporting and political adversary until the end, paying for his care, and later on his funeral.
